Hotel in Nida
Vilnius Gediminas Technical University Bachelor Thesis studio "Hotel in Nida"
Project location: Nida, Lithuania
Year: 2015
The project's task was based on an existing competition for a hotel and conference center project in a truly special location in Lithuania - Nida. Nida is a small town situated in the Curonian Spit, a natural land formation of sand that is recognized as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage. This place holds its uniqueness due to its predominantly human-made natural environment. The once freely shifting sand dunes have been transformed into controlled land by the planting of trees, where numerous fishing villages have been established. The local surroundings exhibit a distinctive style, characterized by brownish wooden houses with blue roofs.
In my architectural approach, I aimed to create a building that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding nature. The "Parnidis" dune, which is just a 10-minute walk away from the site, is even visible from there. Drawing inspiration from the elements of wind and sand, I sought to design a distinctive building that could function as a mountain, a structure, and a shelter.
The volume's shape imitates the sand formations shaped by the wind, resembling an artificial dune that serves as both a building and a viewing platform, offering a public space. Given the project's central location, the quality of the public space is of utmost importance. Instead of designing a secluded hotel complex, the approach is to create a landmark and a unique feature for the town, enhancing its identity.
