Sustainability Research Centre
Tsinghua University studio "Regenerating the areas of the campus"
Project location: Beijing, China

Year: 2018

The project site is situated in the abandoned coal energy plant on the Tsinghua University campus. The studio granted us the freedom to determine the building's function and whether to retain or demolish the existing coal power plant. Before finalizing the function, I conducted research on coal energy in general.

China has long struggled with severe air pollution, which poses health risks not only to humans but also to the natural environment, including flora and fauna. One of the primary contributing factors is China's substantial number of operational coal-fired power stations. As of 2022, there were 1,110 such plants on the Chinese mainland. Coal is widely recognized as the most polluting form of energy, emitting significantly more greenhouse gases than alternative sources such as nuclear, solar, and wind power.

Considering the historical significance and context of the location, I believed that its identity should be preserved as a starting point for something better. China has the potential to make a substantial impact on global pollution by shifting toward a more sustainable path. To lead more responsible lives and comprehend the consequences of our choices, we need to mature and embrace certain values. And what better place to instill these values than a university? Hence, I decided to convert the existing coal power plant into a museum and exhibition hall, while constructing a new building of equivalent proportions in front of it, mirroring the old structure. This new building would serve as a Sustainability Research Center.

In Chinese philosophy, there is a concept of Yin and Yang, emphasizing the balance and interconnection between opposing forces. This ensemble of buildings creates a compelling narrative of the passage of time and the evolving values, emphasizing the lessons we can learn from the past and our aspirations for the future.
