Tsinghua University Faculty of Architecture
Tsinghua University studio "Perfect architecture school"
Project location: Beijing, China
Year: 2018
The task was to design the new Architecture faculty of Tsinghua University. Currently, there is an existing building on the site, and it was our responsibility to decide whether to keep it or not.The primary objective of this studio was to reconsider how architecture is taught to students in universities and determine the ideal working environment we would choose if given complete freedom.
In my opinion, the perfect space for learning architecture is not solely about a beautiful building but rather a place for boundless experimentation with tools, materials, and open working spaces. My ideal architecture school would not be a conventional, aesthetically pleasing structure, but rather a machine - a vast workshop where everyone feels free to create holes in walls or make scratches. This process of the building adapting to the current students' desires and ideas makes it timeless. It's more of a void than a building, ready to be filled with whatever students envision.
I decided to retain most of the existing building and utilize it for theoretical classrooms, while creating a central "hangar" space where the magic would happen. It would be up to the students to determine whether they want to transform this space into a building, a spaceship, a light installation, or simply experiment with materials and create furniture or other forms of art.
Many argue that architecture is primarily done through computer work, but in my perspective, providing opportunities to explore different aspects of this profession would diversify the pool of graduating architects and allow students to specialize in specific fields of the profession.
